Post subject:  Caboose, Depot, Lokie Updates

Hi,

I'm looking for some more information on several topics I've posted to my blogs. They are:

Builders data for the 5 LC&N steam lokies Mike Piersa photographed for his Webshots site: http://www.robertjohndavis.com/blog/?p=58

Ushers, NY on the B&M/D&H joint line. Is it a depot? http://www.robertjohndavis.com/aott/?p=57

Delaware & Hudson caboose #35802 (ex Lehigh Valley #95109) in Sunderland, VT. Any details on plans for it? http://www.robertjohndavis.com/aott/?p=55

And just for a peek, the GN RS-3 on display in Schenectady, NY. http://www.robertjohndavis.com/aott/?p=48

Thanks in advance for any info that furthers these stories.

Rob

Rob,

In regards to the LC&N 42 inch gauge coal mine lokies, the big 0-6-0T's are Vulcans as is one of the 0-4-0T's. I think the other 0-4-0T is a Porter. IIRC there was also another 0-4-0T (I believe a Porter, either 30 or 36 inch gauge) there, but it was sold (I believe it's now in NY).

These lokies were acquired by the late Malcohm Ottinger, who is better known for his past ownership of ex-GM&N 4-6-2 425 (later of BM&R / R&N fame) and ex-Mead Paper Corp. 0-6-0 300 (nee-AB&A 58) (now of W&W fame). The coal mine lokies have been at the late Mr. Ottinger's business, the Ottinger Machine Co., since the 1960's. I believe they are still the property of his son.

Not sure if it's true, but I had heard that the original plan for (at least some of) these lokies was to be in use for some kind of "western theme" attraction, probably along the lines of Carroll Stahls' operation (Carroll Park & Western) that was running at that time near Bloomsburg, Pa. In the linked photos of the 0-4-0T I did note some fancy pinstripping on the rods and a fake "cowcatcher" that may support this notion. If true nothing, of course, became of any plans and (IIRC) Malcohm Ottinger died around 1973.

Mr. Ottinger was a steam machinery buff and I remember him being a member of the Rough and Tumble organization at Kinzers, Pa. He owned a Frick portable steam engine that was at R&T. From the linked photos I see he had several other stationary and portable steam engines as well.

Thanks for link to the photos.

Regards,
Jim Robinson

Checked the info I have on the lokies at the Ottinger Machine Co. last night and found no mention of an additional locomotive that had been sold. I must have been thinking of a different loco somewhere else.

I did note that all of the lokies that are there were built in the 1940's (as late as 1946) and thus must have been fairly new machines when they were retired by LC&N and bought by Mr. Ottinger.

* 0-4-0T #39 is Vulcan 4327/1941
* 0-4-0 #60 is Porter 7795/1945
* 0-6-0T #82 is Vulcan 4767/1946
* 0-6-0T #83 is Vulcan 4768/1946.

I only had these four locomotives listed. If the third 0-6-0T is #81; then I would assume it is Vulcan 4766/1946; but that is only an educated guess.

The Frick traction engine is 26275/1925. Don't know anything about the stationary steam engines, but would like to know.
