Since its abandonment in 1960, the SP narrow gauge does not get as much attention as its surviving D&RGW and EBT counterparts. Here is old No. 9 at Keeler in 1954, and out in the Owens Valley in 1954 and 1959: http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?j ... anColl.jpg http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?j ... anColl.jpg http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?j ... anColl.jpg The latter photo is one of its last runs, when it filled in for GE diesel No. 1, acquired in 1954. No. 9 is inoperable but appears still in good shape after nearly 50 years of inactivity at Laws. It has actually been out in the open since about 1946, when the Keeler enginehouse burned down. |

And the 18 at Zurich in 1954, its last year if use if I recall: http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?j ... enColl.jpg I was surprised to learn that the enginehouse that once housed these locomotives for the Nevada-California-Oregon in Reno is still standing near the depot. The backside apparently looks mostly original, but the street side has been modernized. I drove right by it without knowing it was there. |
