At Kansas City, converted to offices, 2004 photo. Is that a locomotive on the turntable?

That RPO was built for the KCS and was sold to them by Ozark Mountain Railcar several years ago.

The car on the KCT turntable is MKT Bag/RPO 225, built by ACF in 1929. When it was new it looked like this(picture of sister car 232):

In August of 1957, for reasons we may never know(something to do with an incident that happened at Omaha Union Station in 1957 that nobody ever wanted to talk about), the CGW purchased it secondhand from the KATY for $1750.00. Then they proceeded to spend $29,043.06 to "fix it up for service". The records show it took them a year to do so, and included six pages of labor and materials charges. It emerged as CGW #6, a number that made no sense in the CGW numbering scheme. They kept it on the roster for only a few months, then transferred ownership of it to the KCS, but continued to use it until their passenger service ended in
the sixties. The number 6 fit into the KCS roster....they had two similar cars numbered 3 and 5(L&A). I'm still researching to see if a KCS car disappeared in 1957 and if this was just a complicated transaction to make things right and keep certain people out of trouble. The KCS gutted the inside to make it just a baggage car and used it a few times as a last resort, but never repainted it or renumbered it. I've been told it sat in the yards at KCUS for a long time, and finally KCS donated it to Smoky Hill Ry &Historical Society around 1970. When that group split up, it ended up out in Belton, MO on the KC, Belton &Grandview tourist line.

DST Systems, Inc(Founded in 1969 as a division of Kansas City Southern
Industries) was established to develop an automated recordkeeping system for the mutual fund industry. They rehabed the KCT roundhouse as their offices, and as they are very dependant on the the US Post Office for their continued commerce, they wanted an RPO car for display on the turntable outside of their offices(a KCS one would be even better).........They wanted Johnny Marrietta's KCS #34 in Pittsburg, KS,
but that car was not for sale yet(his widow wanted to hold on to his vast
collection of circus memorabilia(which is stored in #34) and so the car was not auctioned off with his boxcars full of railroad memorabilia after his death).

DST bought KCS#6(which was still lettered CGW #6) from the Kansas City, Belton &Grandview...... they contracted with Mid America Railcar, who sent workers out to Belton to rehab the moving parts of the car enough so that it could be moved to their shop(probably hadn't rolled an inch in 25 years). DST paid to have the exterior completely refurbished and painted in KCS colors. They are investigating the costs to accurately restore the inside as an RPO/bag(using original USPS spec sheets for a 30 ft long Railway Post Office for guidance).

I think DST is still interested in KCS #34(It is the last KCS RPO-dorm left).
Johnny Marietta's son told me last year that he may be ready to put it up for sale soon. If anyone hears about this car being put on the market, please speak up. There's an avenue out there where this car might be preserved.

They probably would have been interested four years ago in KCS 68(second to last KCS RPO dorm) in Sand Springs, OK, had they known this car(and its Sunbelt chapter NRHS owners) were in dire straights. Car was scrapped in May of 2004.
