The locomotive is part of the collection of the Southern California Chapter of the R&LHS. It had been moved out of its display at the Los Angeles County fairgrounds in Pomona with the hope of being able to use it on excursions. These hopes failed to materialize and in time the locomotive was moved back to the fairgrounds.

When the original rail connection into the fairgrounds was pulled up the 5021 was isolated from the rest of the collection. Then for the American Freedom Train exhibition a switch was put in and before it was pulled out the 5021 was returned to the fairgrounds.

Several interesting items: SP 5021 a 4-10-2 is at Pomona, California, and ATSF 5021 a 2-10-4 is at CSRM in SAcramento. The SP 5021 is a triple cylinder locomotive; also in the SCC/R&LHS collection is UP 9000, a triple cylinder 4-12-2.

When I worked at San Bernardino for the Santa Fe in 1969-70, a yard crew would move SP 5021 every few weeks to spot a carload of salt for the water softener unit that supplied the steam plant with boiler water. This was near the old sand house west of the shop area. I'm not sure how carefully the engine was lubed before these moves, but one of the fellows on the crew told me that it made typical chuffing noises, indicating that piston and driver rods were intact. Ironically, it was only a few hundred feet from ATSF 3751, which was "stuffed and mounted" in a park, and never moved an inch until it was rescued for its eventual triumphant restoration to active service.

Wasn't that engine occasionally steamed up and moved around in the early 60s? I seem to recall seeing a photo of it under steam in an old (60s) Trains Magazine.

The 5021 was the last steam locomotive to operate on the SP Oregon Div. Mainline. It was the last locomotive to steam out of the Brooklyn Roundhouse.

Portland got So-Cal's loco (4449), and So-Cal got Portlands.....mind you, I'm not complaining!

Steamlocomotive.com has this little teaser:

Quote:
Today, 5021 is kept in excellent condition. This is partially due to circumstances that occurred in the 1970s. In preparation for excursion runs in the Southern California area after the Freedom Train had made her visit, 5021 was taken to the San Bernardino Roundhouse (Santa Fe) and completely overhauled. The overhaul was completed and during certification, a question was raised concerning the traveling into and out of the Los Angeles County area: Does the locomotive have a "smog" device? The answer was no, so approval from the APCD was denied. The cost to bring the engine into line with this requirement was too large to be absorbed, so the locomotive was moved from the roundhouse back to the fairgrounds immediately after the departure of the Freedom Train for storage.

Seems a little far fetched to me. What is the real story?

According to the RLHS flyer I picked up in 1966, the 5021 was fired up and operated back and forth during the 1961 Pomona Fair. In a 1976 phone conversation with Tom Braunger, Retired SP Engineer, they had it hot for 13 days. Sometime after the Fair, the engine was moved dead from Pomona to SB. Minor work and inspections were performed. In 1971, I recall that the engine's log book (located under one of the seat boxes) had a record of a 1965 hydostatic test at SB siding. Although minor work was done, engine still has same tubes, flues, superheaters from SP in 1950s.

For my own satisfaction and learning, I inspected 5021's boiler interior in early 1970s (I was skinnier then). Results: Good far as inspected. Tubes and sheets clean. Recall firebox plate stamped with mill name (Kaiser?) and date (195X ?). 5021 was eventually moved back to Pomona around 1976. The DIT move was SB to Taylor, then to Pomona. The layover at Taylor was due to the logistics of the return move to Pomona. Beautiful engine. Nice machine.

Support your local static display. Support your regional operating engines.

SP 5021 was painted two years ago with a two-part paint. It has been re-lettered. The whistle, which was stolen while it was in San Bernardino has now been returned to the R&LHS.

The other story that is legend within the chapter is that SP did not want it operated, hence the removal of the stock siding at the fair grounds, cutting it off from the display until 4449 and the Freedom Train were at the fairgrounds in 1975-76

This is the story about the non-operated excursions as I recall hearing it.

The SP did not want to operate the locomotive. The Santa Fe would not allow the 5021 with the"Southern Pacific" on the tender; the Chapter would not paint out the name.

There was even a newspaper photo of a handicapped, wheelchair kid in front of the locomotive as a teaser for a fund raising excursion. This premature press release did not cause the railroads to operating the 5021.

This is what I recall hearing some years after the events. But I do recall seeing the newspaper item in a local paper.
