The RYPN community lost a long time member with the death of Jack Nanson (March 1, 1922 - June 16, 2007. Jack was a frequent poster on steam locomotives, especially Frisco #1522, of which he was a long time crewmember, and the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, where he was a volunteer from shortly after it was formed in 1944. He served in the Coast Guard in WW II and was Fire Marshall in the St. Louis suburban Creve Coeur Fire District. He was also a founding member of the Wabash, Frisco & Pacific miniature railroad, now in Eureka, MO. Most may not be aware of his photo work, seen in the early Lucius Beebe books and also in early issues of Trains magazine. Jack worked with Ivan Oaks and William Barham, and usually let these two have the credit line. Barham was a St. Louis motorcycle cop, which made good copy for Beebe, and Oaks had the car they used. Jack or Oaks were the actual photographers most of the time, at least that’s how he told the story, and Ivan Oaks was killed in a WW II plane crash. The Museum of Transportation has Jack’s negative collection. We’ll miss him.
