I heard somewhere recently that Amtrak has 3 full Turboliner Train sets laid up in their Bear, DE Maintenance Yard. How true is this statement? Are they still there and if so is there a way to view the yard without tresspassing onto RR property? I live about 1/2 hr away and work only 15 minutes away so I am familiar with the roads and the area. I HAVE TO see this train!! Is it true? |

My last visit to Bear was a year or two ago, but as I recall you can pretty much walk completely around the perimeter fence and see a lot of the stuff without trespassing on the shop property. Of course, you're going to end up on somebody's property if you walk around, but you're not going to incur the wrath of snarling Dobermans, etc. If you can't see it from the road/drive, your best bet is to walk down the NS line that serves the back side of the property--technically that's trespassing, but it's a quiet branch main, with most trains at night, and there's a lot of room for safety, walking beside the track, etc. However, pack binoculars and telephoto lenses. The storage tracks upon which I last saw these Turbos are a considerable distance from the fences; it reminds you of a military complex or penal institution with the generous use of space. And, of course, there's never any guarantee that you'll see what you're looking for; it's highly likely that some other rolling stock (last time I was there, m-o-w flat cars and I think some ExpressTrak reefers) will block some or all of your views. It's basically a cr*p shoot. Good luck. |

Hey thanks for the tips. I am off on Monday; think I'll cruise on up. |

And of course, don't forget the multiple sets in various stages of restoration or deterioration at Super Steel in Schenectady, NY. Some cars are still "wrapped up", and some are untouched from when they were taken off the road. |
