Sad NdeM 4-8-4

I don't know how recent this photo is, but it's pretty sad. I wonder if the rods still exist or got cut up when it was still in the Huehuetoca scrapyard?

Bob, you can rest assured that the NdeM boys were smart enough not to scrap out the rods on an engine being held for preservation. An old arial photo I have of Huehuetoca shows them on top of the tender. They just took that stuff off the engines so they could move 'em around without eating up the rings, rod bushings, and crankpins.

The photo was said to have been taken in 2001 when it was submitted.

Rather odd, isn't it, that the NdeM folks would retain a static steam locomotive in their yards for nearly 40 years without a plan? I wonder what the long range idea is for this locomotive and the few others they have in storage?

Well, I thought nobody would ever ask !!! Just so happens that a few of my friends in the Club Amigos de Ferrocarril are getting Niagara #3031 ready to run some trips out of Huehuetoca. I think they have a boiler certificate already. They're sending me a TFM rulebook to study, and I am planning to put it to good use in the not-too-distant future. It will also be a pleasure to tell the story when the time comes for that.

The NdeM engines are referred to as "Niagaras", but how do they compare to the NYC engines of the same name?

The NYC Niagaras were quite a bit larger with 79" drivers vs. 70" for the N de M locos. They weighed in at 100,000 lbs. more total loco weight, 61,500 lbs. TE vs. 57,000, and were about 5.5 feet longer. Unfortunately, none of the magnificent NYC engines remain!
