Hey Bob, Thanks for posting the pic. I have always liked the pre-RDC motor cars! I don't think 4666 was ever at W & W, I could be wrong. However, the 4666 is now at the BR&W. I rode her once on a trip to Lambertville a long time back. I bet the second photo is somewhere in NJ. W&W's doodlebug is the 4662. They got it from the National Trolley Museum at Wheaton, MD. I remember reading a story about the 4662's trip from the DC area to Wilmington via the B&O. There was some drama about it being the last car and the couple knuckle breaking or something similar. I'm sure someone else, Mr. Mitchell or Mr. Gears may know more of the story. |

This is probably not the transfer trip from New Hope to Black River & Western about 1975, I think it had white flags for that move.

PRR 4662 was never in Washington, DC. It was stored for a time by the fledgling BSM/NCTM operation at Lake Roland in Baltimore. The Museum was to operate over a former connecting track that ran between the PRR and Western Maryland at the northern edge of the city. The plan was to use PRR 4662 as a generator for the DC trolley power. When the site was abandoned PRR 4662 was sold or traded to cover the moving costs to get the trolleys out of the park. There is a story told about moving PRR 4662 off the property via a conection with the PRR Northern Central. That may be the source of the coupler tale. Wesley |

Thanks for correcting my info! That is interesting about 4662 being used as power source. |

I don't recall there being any issues with the coupler on the 4662. In fact, both original couplers are still on it... I believe the coupler issues is a falmunction of another story about one of the MP54's that still sit down in South Philly due to damamge received while in transit to the W&W in the middle of a lengthly freight. That photo as Jim stated is indeed at Hood on the NH&I, most likely while under Hugh Jenkins control of the throttle. |

There was a story about moving railcar 4662 to the W&W in the railroad's newsletter (THE LANTERN) many years ago. The 4662 was towed from its storage site in MD to live track by, what else, a tow truck. While enroute to the W&W there was a coupler problem (I forget just what it was--most likely a broken knuckle) and I recall reading in the story that some chains were employed to get the job done. As far as the 2nd photo of railcar 4666, indeed it is on the NH&I at Hood. Reading (and I believe later SEPTA) engineer Hugh Jenkins probably was running it and he owned it as well! The 4666 ran for while on the NH&I during the early 70's. I believe the mentioned year, 1975, would be about right when Mr. Jenkins moved the 4666 from New Hope to the BR&W (a stone's throw on foot, a LOT farther by rail!!). 4666's principal use on the BR&W was to cover the Sunday passenger runs between Ringoes and Lambertville. For a while it was used in the Summer weekday Ringoes-Flemington service. Hugh Jenkins continued ownership of the railcar until around '78 or '79, when the BR&W purchased it. The BR&W continued using it as their "Lambertville Train" for about another 10 years; as I recall it went out of service around '88 or '89. Have many great memories of rockin' and rollin' down through the cool woods on hot summer Sundays on the 4666 with her regular crew of Wayne Scott and Norm Hosler (sp.?). After being retired from use on the BR&W, Norm's son Carl acquired the 4666 and continues to fix it up. I believe he got the big Hamilton diesel engine running again a year or two back. By the way, before coming to the NH&I, the 4666 was owned by fellow from Canada named Ray Kennedy, who stored the railcar on the Arcade & Attica RR in NY. Prior to that 4666 belonged to Sloan Cornell (later of Gettysburg RR and Knox & Kane RR fame) and was displayed at his first steam tourist railroad venture, the Penn-View Mountain RR, near Blairsville, PA during the mid 60's. Carl Hosler has been chipping away at 4666 lately and has recently upgraded the layover heater and is now working on the Hamilton's water holding tank. The Hamilton does run. This past summer some additional sheet metal work was done and has been making good progress. Scott |

Thanks for the update Scott. I was one of the New Hope guys who had rode over with the 4666. Do you know what the long term plans for her is? Will she run again on the BR&W to Lambertville? Thanks, David Notarius, London UK. |

PRR 4662 and 4666 are mentioned in this thread. Wasn't there also a third Pennsy doodlebug in existance? Maybe 4668? Or is my memory playing tricks on me again? Les |
