Former Penn Central E8 at Bellvue, Ohio in 2006: http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?m ... 3-4-06.jpg No lifting lugs on nose, so I presume ex-NYC? |

The engine is owned by the Western Reserve Historical Society, it was to go to the museum they were planning in Cleveland to house there transportation collection. I'm not sure if they still plan to go ahead with the museum or not, nothing has been brought up about it in a long time. The unit is just a gutted shell. B. Allan |

It's not owned by the Mad River. We were at the site about a year ago and snapped several photos. The unit was gutted to save another E-unit as the story goes. We talked to the gentleman that owns the facility and its on private property next to the NS r-o-w. And yes, it is in pretty sad shape. Les, you were with me, do you remember if the guy said anything about its heritage? |

I think I've seen the unit, but it's been many years. I believe it's last use was as one of the auxilary fuel tenders that Amtrak had converted several E-units to in the late '70's, early '80's (hence the blanked out windshield). Maybe that was a different unit, since the one I remember had Amtrak markings. Of course, those could have faded off over the years. |

I believe that NYC 4070 is owned (or partially owned) by the curator of the National New York Central Museum in Elkhart, Indiana. I think the engine was stored in Kokomo, Indiana for some time in the 1990's. David Farlow |

My sources show only one Amtrak E converted to a fuel tender, Amtrak 470 (ex-400), and it did not have plated windshields in the photos I have. There could be some confusion, because more than a couple E8's have had special removable plates installed over the windshields during transit and storage. I've installed them myself on the quartet that now resides in Minerva, Ohio......... |

At one time there was a second E unit there and it was painted Amtrak with the windows blanked out. I have a picture of it somewhere taken in the late 1980's with for sale signs on each side. I have no idea what happened to it. B. Allan |
