PASCO, Wash. - One of the last remaining Northern Pacific roundhouses is being dismantled. Crews hired by BNSF from Ray Poland and Sons of Kennewick, Wash., have been taking down the remaining five stalls of the brick and heavy timbered roundhouse for the past two weeks and should have it all gone within three weeks, the Tri City Herald reported. BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas told the Herald the roundhouse is obsolete and no longer needed. He said there are no plans to build another structure but one small portion will remain for maintenance crews. BNSF locomotives are serviced and fueled on another part of the property.
In its heyday, the Pasco roundhouse had 37 locomotive stalls, servicing locomotives from the NP and the Spokane, Portland & Seattle, which was jointly owned by NP and Great Northern. In the late 1970s the railroad tore down much of the roundhouse, leaving the five stalls now being dismantled.

Some of bricks from the roundhouse will be preserved. Jim Bowers, treasurer for the Washington State Railroads Historical Society, told the Herald the demolition crew has agreed to let the Society have a few pickup loads of bricks.

I had a chance to visit the Pasco Roundhouse 10 years ago. Long gone were the huge coaling docks, but if one stood long enough, you could see the foundation in the ground of what once was. The turntable that had turned everything from the Mallets and Northerns to SD-45's was still there, along with a few dark stalls, and a few other buildings. You could also see where they added the first diesel fuel track near the coaling docks before building the present service facility on the opposite side. There was talk earlier this year of closing down the Interbay (Seattle) Roundhouse and building a new locomotive shop at Pasco to replace it. The developers have long wanted that property in Seattle, and like the old waterfront route, want to turn it into condos.
