Post subject: | CNJ combines #277 and #303 |
Hi, On the Railfan.net board there is a conversation that has me scratching my head dealing with two CNJ combines extant in the early 1970's. #277 was floating around the Bethlehem, PA area at that time named "Safari" while #303 was traded from the High Iron Co. to Steamtown where she now runs. The question from the board is where is #277 today? My additional question is which one of these was named "Nomad" for a spell? I thought it was #303. Thanks in advance for any info! Rob Davis |

I think the "Safari" combo was a Jim Hicks-owned car. His cars were used on many CPR 972 trips out of Bethlehem (Jim was a local resident, I recall). HICO originally called its trips "Steam Safaris" (1966-68 era) and some of the cars had names reflecting that-- the CNJ heavyweight baggage car owned by Al Coleman (the mid-train snack and bead-n-trinket car) was called "Oasis", the 303 combine was "Nomad", etc. |
