With all the recent high quality models of Challengers and Big Boys becoming available, I thought some might be interested in seeing one of the UP-design 4-6-6-4s that went first to the D&RGW, then resold to the Clinchfield after WWII. On the Clinchfield, they were rebuilt with single smokestacks, and models are available for the UP, D&RGW and CC&O versions. I heard they sat around on the CC&O into the early 1960s before scrapping, but have not seen a photo if they did. No date or location on the photo: http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?m ... gw3802.jpg |

On page 64 of the book When Steam Ran The Clinchfield is a picture of challengers 660 -663 being scrapped in Tampa, Fl. The locomotives had been retired in 1954 and were being scrapped in November 1962. These were not the ex D&RGW locomotives. There is no mention of other challengers in the scrap yard at the time. These were Alcos similar to the D&H engines built in November and December 1947. John Bohon |

It would be interesting to learn when the former D&RGW engines were scrapped. The other Clinchfield Challengers were more like those on the D&H, the WP and the older UP 3800s. The Clinchfield dieselized fairly early, but I imagine the equipment trust had to run out before the locomotives could be scrapped. |

My knowlege of the Clinchfield is basically limited to this small book I received recently. All of the Rio Grande engines were retired in August of 1953. All of the Clinchfield/D&H designed enignes were retired 5/1/54. The last regular service steam run on the Clinchfield occured on April 16, 1954 using challenger 653 from the original 1942 batch. To make some assumptions I would guess only the 1947 group lasted into the sixties. The engines built in 1942 equipment trusts, if for 15 years, would have run out in 1957. The Rio Grande engines were bought used requiring heavy modification to burn eastern coal and perform well in drag service doing it. They surely did not have equipment trusts totaling anything like the new engines bought at the same time would have. They would have been paid off sooner. The engines delivered in December 1947 were the ones scrapped in 1962, 15 years after purchase. The times of scrapping are not given in the book except for the last engines. That makes my ideas speculation so if somebody knows the correct answers I hope they correct me. I have one question. The challengers delivered in December 1947 were getting late in the game for new steam. Besides the N&W did anybody buy new heavy simple articulateds later than these engines? John Bohon |

The C&O ordered 25 compound 2-6-6-2s from BLW in 1949 which were class H-6. Because of a prolonged coal miner's strike, the order was cut to 10 which became the last engines BLW built for service in the U.S. They were retired in 1957. |
