David Wilkins in the Historic Fabric thread below, makes a passing reference to C&O #2789, a 2-8-4 with a welded boiler. Of the five Chesapeake & Ohio K-4's with welded boilers (#2785-2789) only the 2789 was preserved and is today at the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum in North Judson, Indiana. There were other steam locomotives built near the end of the steam era with welded boilers however, including engines on the D&H and the Santa Fe. I have never been able to determine for sure if any other of these engines survived. Can anyone tell me which ones did? Or is our #2789 the only one? Thanks. Les Beckman (HVRM) midlandblb@cs.com |

Les, You may have the only existing steamer in the U.S. with an "original equipment" welded boiler. Besides the engines like 2789, a lot of replacement welded boilers were installed in the late 40's due to the cracking of the riveted nickle steel boilers that were popular in the late 30's/early 40's. I believe the Santa Fe had a big boiler replacement program going when steam ended. A few new welded boilers have been built in recent years. The Texas State Railway Museum has a 2-8-0 with a welded boiler, and I believe others have been built for replacement on narrow gauge engines and such, and the few replica steam engines which have been built since the end of steam have welded boilers.
