In 1892, check out the dual gauge trackwork:

What does "Broad Guage" equal?

"GAUGE", dammit, gauge, gauge, gauge......... sorry..........

Great Western Railway (England) used seven-foot broad gauge (sometimes reported as 7' 0 1/4" for whatever reason).

Post subject:  Didcot broad-gauge re-creation

Mixed broad- and standard-gauge trackage can now be seen again at the museum at Didcot, England. This is a small site with a very large collection crammed into a former GWR engine terminal in the wye between the main line and the branch to Oxford. It is largely devoted to the GWR, but equipment from other lines and British Rail can be seen there, too.

A transloading shed between the 7-foot and 4' 8-1/2" systems still stands at the site, and has been re-equipped with both guages. A replica broad-gauge 2-2-2 was almost complete when I saw it about two years ago. The museum managers have done an astonishing job of integrating the 7-foot gauge trackage into their site. Too bad the place is too small to get the 2-2-2 up to 60 m.p.h. or more, though.

Just another case of the amazing things the preservation movement has produced in Great Britain. Now, if they'd just re-enact the dutch drops of loaded passenger coaches from high-speed trains that they used to practice at that station, using handbrakes to come to a stop at the platform . . .

I think the term in the public schedules was "slip coach".
