A friend just recently notified me of this exellent website/chatroom so now that I'm onboard I've got to get up to speed. Back on November 15, K R Bell commented about my 1980 "Private Passenger Car Annual" as a "condensed" precursor version (at the time, it was a monumental task) of a proposed Historic Rolling Stock Directory of North America. For what it's worth, I'm still at it; over the intervening years I've continued to collect additional and corrected data with the intent of eventually producing an expanded and updated edition of the old "Annual." With wholesale dumping of hundreds of cars by the likes of Amtrak, VIA, and various transit agencies in the interim and those cars often going thru various rounds of ownership--some of which are no more than brokerages--it has become an incredibly complex, but not insurmountable task. It remains my intent to reissue the book in an updated format. I believe it will have to be in two iterations: the first as basically raw data, updated with what information I have available, and a corrected re-release based on whatever updated and/or additional information the first reissue will I am sure generate. While not an overall "Rolling Stock Directory," it will help fill the void insofar as passenger equipment goes and result in an updated reference document, much as the original PPCA was in its time. As information, the same type of update is in store for its sister release, the old Railway Passenger Car Annual, which covered Amtrak, Transit Agencies and the Class 1's. I'll be retired within the year and then able to work on these projects almost full-time, so progress from that point should be fairly rapid. In the interim, any current information--especially on isolated cars on or off live rail--will be appreciated. I can be reached via email, or via snailmail at PO Box 7787, Citrus Heights, CA 95621. pullmandave@juno.com |
