I recall that an industrial firm (steel mill?) had a fleet of these. This one appears to be retired and on display. Anyone know more? http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?j ... westry.jpg |

One of a small group (4 or 5) of Alco S-1's exported new to the UK for use by a steel company. These are noteworthy as they were the only Alco diesels ever sold into the UK market and the only North American locomotives operating in the UK until the arrival of the EMD Class 66's many, many years later. Recall that at least one unit is under the care of a legit preservation outfit. DPK |

Originally these were for private companies and I can't remember exactly who the first two were but the last order was for National Power.... |

Foster Yeoman (now Mendip) and ARC (Amey Roadstone Corporation, now Hanson). See September 2007 Railway Magazine or http://www.traintesting.com/Class_59.htm |
