Post subject: Baldwin Sharks on the EL&S

Hello-

I know this has probably been asked before, but what happened to the Baldwin Sharks that EL&S had at Wells? I know that the EL&S is NOT railfan friendly, and from I understand, for good reason (the type of "supposed" railfans who break-in and steal things and give the rest of us bad names). With the closure of some of the mines & docks that EL&S serves, should there be cause for alarm that something might happen to them?

Cause for alarm? Yes.

Ability to do anything about it? Not likely.

The owner, Mr.Larkin, is obviously well aware of their significance and he alone will decide their fate.

Last year I attempt to contact Mr Larkin on behalf of a well-established RR museum I am associated with to offer indoor display and limited operation. In spite of writing on letterhead and making phone calls before/after, I never even received the courtesy of any reply.

Time will tell.

BTW will this drop in traffic be severe enough to cause possibilty of abandonment?

The E&LS makes most of its' money in the freight car repair business. They have a huge facility at Escanaba. Their other big source of income is storing hundreds if not thousands of freight cars on lines that have no traffic.
Mr. Larkin is (or was) on the Board of Directors at the Lake Superior Museum of Transportation at Duluth, MN.

I, too, have pursued the Baldwins on behalf of several museums--both the Sharks for one place and several road switchers from SAL for Southeastern museums. Remember, also, that ther roundhouse reportedly houses at least one steam locomotive.

Basically, all I'm at liberty to say is that those Sharks are in no danger whatsoever. They will find at least one good home someday in the future.

Meanwhile, I reiterate--there are several nice SAL/SCL Baldwin road switchers in the dead lines on the E&LS. Wouldn't one look nice outside Savannah, or at Gold Coast, or Rion?
