Sloan - It's nice to get a report on the Fox River Trolley Museum. This is one museum that has not had much news reported here on RyPN. The newsletter was nice, and I enjoyed looking it over. But if you, or someone else, could keep us abreast on future happenings in South Elgin, that would certainly be great! Les |

As a former working member at FRTM, I can well attest to nature's perverse talent for wrecking havoc on museums in general, and FRTM in particular. For those not familiar, FRTM operates roughly 1-3/4 mile of track situtated in a north/south configuration just immediately west of the Fox River in the town of South Elgin, IL. (Former ROW of the Aurora Elgin & Fox River Electric). The majority of the track separates homes and backyards (on the west) from the forest preserves, bike path, and Fox River, on the east. Storms can really cause damage here since, as noted in the newsletter, many of the trees in the area are truly magnificent old specimens, most aged hundreds of years. I recall a Memorial Day Monday about 8 years ago where my preparations for the day's operations where curtailed for about 2 hours while I removed a similar huge branch (requiring use of the museum's front-end loader) that had narrowly missed demolishing the depot and crew locker. Similar bad weather has been afoot in Illinois most of the past week or so. IRM had to cancel Sunday's Thomas event due to high water (check IRM's website for webcams) I haven't had a chance to get over to FRTM in the past couple of days, but I suspect that at some critical spots (for example where the ex-IC bridge crosses the ROW and Fox River at Coleman) the tracks may be either under water or distressingly close to it. All just an important reminder that preservation, at least for the operating museums is as much about infrastructure as it is about the trains ! |
