My #2 son shot this picture a day ago, in Cooperstown. Obviously, the purpose is to keep a GG1 from rolling, just how effective it would be is a matter of speculation rather than criticism.

Yeah somehow I do not believe the person who selected the size of chain understands the physics involved...

If it is just intended as a visual safety it isn't large enough to be seen nor brightly colored.

Looking at the general condition in the pictures....I think that chain to be perfectly adequate to keep the G from rolling!

Richard, does your son have a white SUV? I was around there on Sunday having come to Cooperstown for a weekend getaway. On my way home I went and looked at the GG-1s and other stuff stored at Cooperstown Junction. Saw a man and woman walking around taking some photos. Some neat stuff in this cold storage area but unfortunately rusting away. The CACV does have lots of stuff to maintain and keep the equipment up in Milford in pretty decent shape.

And no, the GG-1s haven't moved in a year. They were in the same spot last February.

So I guess the chain is doing its job.....lol. In all seriousness this is probably more like "blue flag" protection, rather than for actual security reasons.

One of those is the Henry Ford Museum GG1, they dumped a bunch of money into, only to be told it couldn't be moved. Sad.

Yeah, what is that about? Who won't move it and why? Get them under cover for Pete's sake.

I believe the accurate answer is "CSX, because they don't want to."

Umm, it's not that bright. There's that little issue of raising $400,000 to do the job. There won't be much from the state.

I think he means "bright" as in there's a plan in place. But, as old Bobby Burns said, "The best laid schemes o' mice an' men / Gang aft agley."

Wait....is that the cost for the 460 or the 4800?....and what, are they planning to restore it to operation?

For the 4800, I know that its "impossible" to do the above, but it does make you wonder.....$400,000 seems a tad steep for a paint job.

Who is ripping who off?

This might be a stupid question, but Im gonna ask it anyway. haha Why are the GG1s always said to be unable to run ever again? Were the motor armatures gutted or did they rip the transformers from them?
