A must read for any individual or institution in the business of caring for large industrial obects is "Standards in the Museum Care of Larger and Working Objects: Social and Industrial History Collections," published by the Museums and Galleries Commission, London, in 1994 (available for twenty pounds British currency from 16 Queen Anne's Gate, London SW1H 9AA, telephone 071 233 4200). This 93 pg. report sets down standards for the museum care of large industrial objects, many of which pertain specifically to steam locomotives and railroad equipment. The National Railway Museum in York was one of the compilers. It is very thorough and could serve as a basis for something similar in the U.S. IMHO, the Brits are years ahead of us on the ethics of industrial object use, and all of us could learn a few things by drawing on their experiences. It is recommended reading for anyone in the field of railway preservation. |
