Taken in late-2006, before it was withdrawn for more repairs. C&S didn't haul D&RGW freight cars by the time the flying Rio Grande logo was adopted, but considering that 40 years ago virtually none of this was here, it is a pretty amazing thing to comprehend. With all the budget woes these days, it would be unlikely the Loop would be rebuilt if proposed today.

The shot was taken September 27th of '06 - almost a year ago now, and near the end of 9's all too brief rebirth. I'd agree completely that a rebuild of the Loop would be unlikely in this day and age. The concern now, however, is if the rebuilt Loop - a once successful operation - will be able to continue. They're limping along this year on a single light locomotive, had to delay the start of their season and have suffered multiple shutdowns since.

Yep, it's too bad about the D&RGW equipment, but it still made for a fine sight.

I could write a book about it but nobody would believe it.

Rumors circulating that CHS has again prepared a bid package for work on 9 but with inadequate funding - the figure I heard was about $175K. I have seen nothing on paper nor have I any firsthand information.
