I once worked for MARC. "Most recently" is about 1990, seventeen years ago. Also, (I may have the numbers reversed) a main generator failed on the 61, the 62 was not quite ready for service, and MARC bought out the lease on both locomotives and returned them to the lessor. It seemed to be a case of MARC not only paying to lease, but was paying to progressively restore the locomotives. They went on to get six retired BN/Metra units that served much more reliably until the GP40WH-2's were delivered. I also find it amusing that they tout the Paducah rebuildings; remember, they were almost thirty years ago!

Seventeen years of dead storage does not make anything better. Do you think a blue card with seventeen years of out-of-service credit is going to mean reliable working air brakes? Caveat emptor!

Well, I'm not sure about the legalities of the situation, but I've been told (and seen it happen, on one occasion) that at least a couple of the locos are occasionally started up and run a bit just to keep them alive, and on at least one occasion Ohi-Rail apparently "borrowed" two of them for emergency locomotive rescue/substitution on a freight run.

The E9 is in Tacoma WA, (CEECo facility) and was restored to its original MILW 36A configuration. And is part of GPRR's operation. The unit is fully operational and blue carded.

Yeah, thanks for the correction, the E9 went west along with a couple C&NW bilevels and was never sent to Ohio. Though I'll bet they can still find the dents from when part of the EJ&E shop building it was in at Joliet fell down upon it.........
