Post subject:  GE 25 Tonner Question

A friend recently purchased an operable GE 25 tonner. We've been looking for the locomotive's serial number but cannot find it. The builders plate seems to be missing. Did GE stamp the builders number somewhere on the mainframe?

If we did find the number is there a listing that would show when it was built and for whom?

This seems to be an earlier model due to the Sharon couplers on it.

Thanks

Try this Yahoo Group, which seems to have a lot of such knowledge:

GE routinely (but not 100%) stamped the serial number (5 digits, all numeric) UNDER the builder's plate. Of course this area gets very rusty on older locos and it sometimes takes a lot of scraping to bring out the numbers. I've ID'd many GE diesels by this means.

Check the door frame on the engineer's side (IIRC), I have seen it on our 44 tonner, and I think I also saw it on our 25 tonner also.
