Excuse my ignorance, but what is that little four wheel wooden thing that is apparently coupled to the Pacific's tender? Can't be a regular freight car, can it?

Sorry to say, that's a typical (though by then becoming fast obsolete) coal wagon of the era--I think 10-tonne..........

That sure looks like a regular five plank wagon. Regarding her work, I believe it is cosmetic only. The end result will return her to her original, as built, streamlined configuration. It was in this condition she operated in the states. Cousin engine 6100, a 4-6-0, which also made the trip across the pond is under running overhaul. Hamilton should be near to completion, if not already. Sister Sutherland is currently running. Has anyone a recent photo of sister City of Birmingham?

I agree. looks like a 10 tonne, 5 plank wagon. There's not much to them really, especially next to an express engine like LMS#6229. A better pic of a typical same wagon here:
