Post subject:  Greenfield Village 8 question

What is going on with this 0-6-0 (which never was actually owned by the Detroit & Mackinac apparently) at Greenfield Village? Is the tender under repair or did it donate parts to something else?

This engine wasn't originally a D&M engine, but was restored and operated by the Pinkerton family that owned the D&M in the 1970s. Mr. Pinkerton donated it and some cars to Greenfield Village about 25 years ago, but the Village never did anything with the engine and (as I recall) sold off the cars.

Does anyone have a more-recent update?

The tender frame for the 8-spot is currently in the roundhouse undergoing a restoration.

The Locomotive, combine, baggage car, observation car and caboose were donated to Greenfield Village in 1979. The observation and baggage cars have been sold.
The caboose was used for rides in the 1996 season.
The Locomotive was used to produce steam for the Detroit River Tunnel Industrial Works crane during railroad days.
The combine is inside the Henry Ford Museum.
As Mr. Sutter stated, the tender is being rebuilt in the roundhouse, which is why the cistern is on a cart on the previous photo.

The 0-6-0 was built for Michigan Alkali.

Is that a "shield" over the headlight of the engine when it was at Michigan Alkali? Also, it looks as if it has a wooden cab when it was there. True? And if so, is that the same cab it now has at Dearborn?

That is a shield on the 8's headlight when it was at the Quarry, but it didn't have that when delivered and when Pinkerton had it. The cab is wood and imagine it has been rebuilt. It doesn't have the bracing on the side though.

When the consist was donated to the Museum, it was run as whole. I couldn't imagine running from Tawas to Dearborn on a rickety 0-6-0!
