I suspect these photographs have been copied from a book titled "The Great Western Remembered" compiled by Gavin Morrison and John Whiteley and published about 1980.

I was fascinated to see my picture of 7819 "Hinton Manor" which was taken at Shrewsbury before departure to Aberystwyth on the "Cambrian Coast Express".

I was on holiday with my parents at Aberystwyth and travelled to Shewsbury and back behind 7819. It was in good mechanical condition and was kept clean by Aberystwyth depot staff as one of the two locos selected for working the "CCE". I think the other was 7803.

1964 was the last year for Aberystwyth as a sub depot to Machynlleth. The following year the Manors were transferred to Shrewsbury. Although they continued to work the Cambrian line their external and mechanical condition deteriorated and they were all withdrawn in November 1965. Happily some went to Barry scrapyard and later into preservation.

I suppose I should be after Mr Testagrose for breaching my copyright - I don't recall receiving a cheque from him - but in truth I had nearly forgotten about the photograph so thanks for finding it Bob.

Jim Livesey.
