Downtown station and D&H 4-8-4, 8/31/52: http://abpr2.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi? ... d+h307.jpg This old station was removed in the late-1950s and replaced by a supermarket, which still exists. Trackage and railyard downtown, which had numerous guarded street crossings, were removed to the west of the city by 1958, at state expense. With much new construction, you'd have trouble believing today that trains ever ran just a block from Broadway. Nothing is too expensive for Saratoga, however, and the city got a new Amtrak station on the west side a few years ago, costing $5.6M, replete with grand piano in the waiting room. |

Was the new station a rebuild of the station built when the tracks were moved to outside of town or was it entirely new? |

It was intended to use the steel framework of the 1950s station for the new one, but for some reason that did not happen and the new station is all new material. |

Indeed it was supposed to be a "rebuild", but what a joke it turned out to be. They ended up trashing every brick except, IIRC, the slab of the south wall, which was probably so they could still call it a "renovation" on paper, but it was pretty much a knock-it-down-and-rebuild-it sorta thing. I was around there often enough during the last days of the 1960 structure, and was freely given some artifacts to take home, including some old obsolete signs and the old arrival/departure-times display case that hung on the wall for many years, and now hangs nicely in one of my rooms, completely displaying the info from the last day it came off the wall. (If anyone wants a pic, then PM me). The one piece which was offered to me which I just couldn't take was the old D&H safe, and this sucker was OBVIOUSLY from the ORIGINAL Saratoga depot in town. I just had NO way to get that thing home, and absolutely no place in my house that would be able to store it. It sat in the construction storage container for a while, but I have no idea of the whereabouts of it now. I'm hoping that some historical society was able to snag it. The CDTA had so many grandious plans for the new station, including vendor spaces, but it sits mostly empty except for the Amtrak agent and for occaisonal special events. |
