Since the L&PS quit electric passenger service in 1957 and electric freight switching at the end of 1964, much of the 1500VDC equipment has survived. Cars 16 and 21, (motor and control trailer) formerly TMER&L are at IRM, Car 10 is at Exporail (Delson), and 14 is under restoration at the ECRM, St. Thomas. We also have control trailer 3, which in poor condition and GE sixty ton boxcab L-2 in the HCRR collection, sister L-1 is at the ECRM. Other freight and work cars exist as well. Were L&PS 16 and 21 ex-TMER&L cars before they went to the L&PS? I surmise by the photo captions, that they were. But what about the other surviving L&PS equipment? Also ex-TMER&L? Les |

Les, L&PS 16 & 21 were originally TMER&L cars. The only other L&PS car that was formerly TMER&L and still exists, that I know of, is the body of L&PS 23 which has been made into a private residence in Grand Bend, Ontario, not sure of it's original number. The majority of L&PS motor cars were built to Hydro Electric Power Commission specs. by Jewett in Newark OH, cars 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 were 59' long, built in 1915. Cars 12 and 14 were similar but 71' and arrived in 1917. These cars were all steel construction, 1500VDC with GE Type MK, multiple control and were state of the art for their time. L&PS 23 was TMER&L 1134. Here are some photos of it in its L&PS working life and its life as a cottage today. http://www.trainweb.org/elso/lps23.htm http://www.trainweb.org/elso/LPS23COT.HTM |

As far as I know, there were only four TMER&L cars that went to the L&PS: TMER&LCo. 1129 coach TMER&LCo. 1135 parlor TMER&LCo. 1136 parlor All built by Khulman, 1909 or thereabouts TMER&LCo. 1134 parlor Built by St. Louis Car Co. about the same year. All were extensively remodeled by the TM in the early twenties. The other two parlor cars were named MENDOTA and MEMOMINEE. Somewhere between the TM assigning numbers to the named cars, and the L&PS renumbering them, those two parlor cars were mis-identified on the roster; IRM thought it had the MENDOTA; found it was the MENOMINEE when the paint was stripped. |
