Post subject:  Catskill Mountain RR Volunteer Workdays - 10/6, 10/7, 10/8

Saturday, October 6th:

Track Blitz - Cold Brook

On Saturday, October 6th, we will be working on completing our Cold Brook extension in order to put the track into revenue service. This will include plating and spiking about 80 more ties between MP 22.7 and 22.4 and a few east of Cold Brook Station. These will be the last ties to be plated and spiked.

Also, there are about 10 large trees that need to be cut that are too close to the track, and if anyone would like to cut these, bring your chainsaw and we will show you what to do.

We will meet at the old iron bridge, MP 22.38, 10:00 am. I will be bringing tools from Phoenicia so we can remove ties and plates from the remaining ties we need to replace. Please bring shovels and your lunch with you as we plan to work through lunch.


N5B Caboose Restoration - Kingston

On Saturday, October 6th, Jeff Otto and Earl Pardini will be opening the Cornell Street yard at 9:00am to continue work on the N5B Caboose restoration.


Sunday, October 7th


Phoenicia/Cold Brook

On Sunday, October 7th, George Peck will be doing additional finish work on the Cold Brook extension, depending on turnout. He will start in the Phoenicia yard between 10 and 10:30 am.


Kingston - Caboose Restoration

Cornell Street will open at 9:00am on Sunday, October 7th. Plans are to continue working on the N5B caboose, lettering the 401 and planning for upcoming track work in Kingston.


Monday, October 8th (Columbus Day)


Phoenicia/Cold Brook

On Monday, October 8th, George Peck will be doing additional finish work on the Cold Brook extension, depending on turnout. He will start in the Phoenicia yard between 10 and 10:30 am.


Kingston - Caboose Restoration

Earl Pardini MAY be opening the Cornell Street yard on Monday, October 8th, depending on interest. If you would like to work Monday, please contact him directly. Plans are to continue working on the N5B caboose, lettering the 401 and planning for upcoming track work in Kingston.

Weather is expected to be nice this weekend - sunny in the upper 70's in Kingston and Phoenicia.

Saturday, October 6th:

Cold Brook

Yesterday, we had a good crew at Cold Brook wrapping up plating and spiking between the iron bridge at MP 22.38 and MP 22.72.

Present were George and Gregory Peck, Tom Healy, Dick Wilhelm, Jason DiTolla, Steve Gollow, Joe Marsh, Paul Hintz, Bob Blake, Ron Epstein, and myself.

Steve Gollow also cut brush along the ROW making enough room for the coach.

Except for some ties east of Cold Brook Station, all ties have been inserted and spiked. Next chore will be taking the ballast regulator down the ROW, and after that ballasting and tamping. The Cold Brook extension is nearly complete.

Kingston

On Saturday, October 6th, Earl Pardini led a crew in Kingston continuing work on the N5B caboose.


Sunday, October 7th

Today, we has two crews working:

Phoenicia

In Phoenicia, George Peck, Peter Fluchere, and Steve Gollow worked in the Phoenicia yard today on needed maintenance for the track equipment.

Kingston

In Kingston, Earl Pardini led a team on the N5B caboose which included Greg Vaughn, Ernie Klopping, Mike LaLonde, John Patane, Al Schoessow, Joe Iacovello, and Peter Fluchere (late in the day).

The team was inserting hot rivets between the caboose frame and some new steel parts, painting the caboose with primer, and welding on the ends.

In terms of our tourist train, this weekend we had standing room only crowds on both Saturday and Sunday. The 29, two flats, and coach 701 were used for all runs.

Post subject:  Catskill Mountain RR Volunteer Workdays - 10/13, 10/14

Though we have not completely finished the Cold Brook Extension, the time has come to shift our efforts to Kingston to get the track rehabilitated so we can run special trains at Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. All hands to Kingston!


Saturday, October 13th:

Track Blitz - Kingston

On Saturday, October 13th, George Peck will be starting track rehabilitation in Kingston beginning at MP 3.47 and working west. This will initially involve tie plate and spike removal, and removal of ties. We will also be inserting and spiking as may ties as we can. George Cook will be bringing his track car to help out.

We will meet under Chandler Drive (I-587 or MP 3.56) between 9 and 9:30am. This is located just east of Kingston Plaza at the end of an access road on the south side of the tracks. Please bring shovels and other equipment useful in removing plates and spikes with you.


N5B Caboose Restoration - Kingston

On Saturday, October 13th, Earl Pardini will be opening the Cornell Street yard at 9:00am to continue work on the N5B Caboose restoration. Hot riveting will be done on the south side of the caboose, and priming will be done on the north side.


Coach 702 Renovation - Phoenicia

Al Johnson and George Liucci are finishing putting the top and bond coat on the floor of the 702 Saturday. They could use ONE extra hand. If you are interested, please contact George, Al or myself directly before Saturday.


Mt. Pleasant Station

Gladys and Peter could use an extra hand around train times in Mt. Pleasant on both Saturday and Sunday to sell tickets and concessions, due to expected large crowds. If you would like to help, call Gladys ahead of time.


Sunday, October 14th


Kingston - Trackwork

On Sunday, October 14th, George Peck will be continuing track work in Kingston, starting between 10 and 10:30am. Please meet under Chandler drive, MP 3.56, as on Saturday.


Kingston - Caboose Restoration

Cornell Street will open at 9:00am on Sunday, October 14th. Plans are to continue working on the N5B caboose and helping the track gang in Kingston.


Weather is expected to be perfect this weekend - sunny and a high of 59 degrees on both days.

Saturday, October 13th, we had two crews working:

Kingston - Trackwork

Present were: George Peck, John Isaken, Steve Gollow, Ron Epstein, Thom Johnson, Bob Blake, Al Schowessow, Dave and Brian Mason, George Cook, Gary Lowe, myself, and newcomer Mark Glaser.

We inserted, tamped, plated and spiked 24 ties covering abount 150 feet, extending the working part of the line from MP 3.47 to MP 3.50.

Kingston - Cornell Street


Work continued on the N5B caboose - rivet holes were drilled out on the south side of the caboose.

Present were Earl Pardini, Jeff Otto, John Patane, and Raphael Demeglio.

Post subject:  Catskill Mountain RR Work Report - 10/14/07

On Sunday, October 14th, work done in the Kingston yard was reported by Jeff Otto:

"We bolted the container to the flat car to eliminate the need to chain it down for traveling, added about 20 gallons of cooling water to #401, fixed the valve on the side dump car, and set up tie plates on the flat car to help expedite the tie replacement. On the caboose, we cleaned up the two side grab irons and their special mounting castings in preparation for remounting them, primed part of the West end, installed the brake valve, needle gunned and wire brushed the South side and West end, installed the 16 rivets, painted the North side and the East end red, straightened and cleaned up all the window frames, and welded bolt holes on both sides."

Present were Earl Pardini, George Peck, Jeff Otto, PJ Hintz, Walt Otto, Al Schoessow, Ernie Klopping, Gary Lowe, John Patane, Greg Vaughn, George Cook, Bob Blake, Steve Arnold, Clem Arnold, Tim Arnold, Ilene Arnold, and Mimi Pardini.

Saturday, October 20th:


Mt. Pleasant Station

Due to overflowing crowds at Mt. Pleasant station, Gladys and Peter could use extra hands around train times in Mt. Pleasant on both Saturday and Sunday for 1 - Parking Lot attendants to park cars & pick up trash; 2 - Station attendants to manage crowds; 3 - extra car attendants for train to help with our quests.

If you would like to help, call Gladys ahead of time or just stop by Saturday morning and ask Gladys and Peter how you can help.


Track Blitz - Kingston

On Saturday, October 20th, starting at 9am, George Peck will be continuing track rehabilitation in Kingston beginning at MP 3.5 and working west. We should have additional mechanical equipment to help us reach our goal of at least 50 ties and 500 feet for the weekend. This will enable us bring our worktrain to the other side of Chandler Drive, in sight of Kingston Plaza.

We plan to reach Westbrook Lane, MP 3.78, by November 3rd, and Fair Street, MP 4, by November 17th.

We will meet under Chandler Drive (I-587 or MP 3.56) at 9am. This is located just east of Kingston Plaza at the end of an access road on the south side of the tracks. Please bring shovels and other equipment useful in spiking, plating and tamping with you.


N5B Caboose Restoration - Kingston

On Saturday, October 20th, Earl Pardini and Jeff Otto will be opening the Cornell Street yard at 9:00am to continue work on the N5B Caboose restoration. Painting will continue on the west and south sides of the caboose.



Sunday, October 21st


Kingston - Trackwork

On Sunday, October 21st, George Peck will be continuing track work in Kingston, starting between 10 and 10:30am. Please meet at the Cornell Street yard.

On Saturday, October 20th, we had 2 crews working in Kingston, in addition to our regular train operating crews in Phoenicia.


Track Blitz - Kingston

Today we had a 14 person crew working in Kingston, and removed, inserted, tamped and spiked 52 ties, extending our line from MP 3.5 to MP 3.55, just short of Chandler Drive (I-587), MP 3.56. The crew conisted of Foreman George Peck, Harry Jameson, Earl Pardini, Derek Stapleton, Al Schoessow, PJ Hintz, Peter Fulchere, George Cook, Bob Blake, Ron Epstein, Mimi Pardini, Ed Palmatier, Mark Glaser and myself.

Saturday, October 27th:

Track Blitz - Kingston

On Saturday, October 27th, starting at 9am, George Peck will be continuing track rehabilitation in Kingston beginning at MP 3.55 (Chandler Drive) and working west. We will try to beat our 52 ties installed last Saturday and get at least 60 ties inserted and spiked for the day.

We will meet under Chandler Drive (I-587 or MP 3.56) at 9am. This is located just east of Kingston Plaza at the end of an access road on the south side of the tracks. Please bring shovels and other equipment useful in spiking, plating and tamping with you.


N5B Caboose Reconstruction - Kingston

On Saturday, October 27th, Earl Pardini and Jeff Otto will be opening the Cornell Street yard at 9:00am to continue work on the N5B Caboose reconstruction.



Sunday, October 28th


Kingston - Trackwork

Trackwork on Sunday will depend on crew size and interest. If you would like to continue trackwork on Sunday, report to the Cornell Street yard on Sunday, October 28th, to Earl Pardini any time after 9am.


Kingston - Caboose Reconstruction

Cornell Street will open at 9:00am on Sunday, October 28th. Plans are to continue working on the N5B caboose.


Weather is expected to be scattered showers on Saturday and sunny on Sunday with highs in the mid-sixties both days. On Saturday we will work under Chandler drive during times of rain, so we should be able to continue work rain or shine.

Post subject:  Catskill Mountain RR Work Report - 10/27

On 10/27/07, we had some rain in the morning which slowed us down. We inserted 27 more ties, and plated and partially spiked 17 of these. This took us to the far side of Chandler Drive, about MP 3.57.

Present were foreman George Peck, Earl Pardini, Bob Blake, Rich Bause, Jeff Otto, John Patane, Al Schoessow, Harry Jameson, Tom Healy and myself. We had a visit from a reporter from the Daily Freeman, who is writing a feature story on the railroad and its volunteers.

We had the Tie Handler to help us yesterday, which was brought down from Phoenicia Friday.

No work was done on the caboose on 10/27 due to rain.
