I represent the Vintage Locomotive Society in Winnipeg Canada, and we run a short line using a 1882 Dubs locomotive which needs a new boiler. Are there any outfits in North America which still build steam boilers? Keith bradley kbradley@mts.net |

Try contacting Blair Lavell at Texas State Railroad who has had a very large boiler built recently and is now working on another. Monroe boiler of Pittsburgh built boilers recently for Crown engines and might be able to handle the job. Given the relative streingth of the NA dollar, you might try the boiler works that builds new boilers for Puffing Billy. Could end up cheaper. Or, Israel Newton in the UK. Does the Dixon Boiler Works in Los Angeles still make custom boilers? They did the two boilers for the replica 4-4-0s "Jupiter" and No. 119 for the Golden Spike National Historic site around 1978-79. Jeff Terry jterry618@msn.com |

Not to second guess you but before you spend alot of money on a new boiler, are you sure it needs one? There some out there who will condemn a boiler in the hopes that you will get them to make a new one for you. If you haven't already gotten one, you may consider a second or even third opinion on your boiler. I'll second the idea of getting at least a second opinion. There is at least one engine running out there with a 125 year old boiler and many others that are pushing 75 or even 100 years. The 125-year-old one got a doubler plate to reinforce a thin spot. Over the years boilers got new courses, or new fireboxes, etc. I suppose that one of the greatest problems today is that few people have experience with riveted locomotive boilers.
