You have to join the Historic Sierra Railway Yahoo group to see these, but they are undated photos of Sierra RR 2-8-0s 18 and 24, taken at the Jamestown roundhouse. No. 18 was sitting derelict in a field in Oregon last I knew, and No. 24 was scrapped about 1955, after the BLW diesels came.

The 18 is a good looking engine. It's too bad it doesn't belong to someone who can restore it and have it in operation. It's small enough to be economicaly run regularly by a tourist operation.

Is Sierra 18 in the same location (same owner) as GN 1246? That engine too, is small enough to be run economically be a museum or tourist operator.

There are only a handful of railroads that should take in the #18. They are first, the PLA, to which it seems you are a member, and to the California State Railroad Museum, who need a steamer about that size badly. with her superheater boiler, she should have enough power to handle those steel coaches, but she needs a very thorough restoration. I believe PLA is the better bet to take her in warm arms.

The PLA owns the Sierra 30 and will be getting boiler work done on it (hopefully) soon. THe steam crew is also in the process of restoring the Clover Valley #4 (a 2-6-6-2) along with keeping the Quincy #2 and Robert Dollar #3 running. The Sierra #18 would be a good addition but I don't see us taking on any more projects right now. The best place for the #18 would be back in the roundhouse at Jamestown.

Yeah, but its that you guys can restore something. both Railtown and CSRM are too poor to take her back and operate her. plus, she would barely ever be used to pull anything, because she's not as strong as the #28 to pull those excursion trains. I guess Railtown could take her in and at least cosmetically restore her.
