The Pioneer Zephyr was beautifully restored a few years ago. Did it ever occur to anyone that the original Winton motor is at the Smithsonian? At one time, there was a "chance" to have the original motor in the Pioneer Zephyr, but I don't remember anyone complaining about the restoration of the Zephyr with its later motor in the car body.

This question came up here some time ago. From the responses, I gathered that the Pioneer Zephyr still has the Winton it was retired with. The engine at Smithsonian was apparently used to power an electric generating demonstration at the 1939 World's Fair. Can anyone confirm this?

What I was told long ago was that the original prime mover was removed from the Pioneer Zephyr during an overhaul, reconditioned and installed in another CB&Q locomotive. When the locomotive was later traded in to EMD, someone looked up the low serial number on the engine, traced its origins back to the Pioneer Zephyr, and word ultimately got to the Smithsonian.
