N&W 475, others

475 in ceremonial dress, no date or place, but maybe Roanoke 1957?

295, 0-8-0, retired in 6/60 at Williamson, WV, not ten years old yet. Did any of these operate into 1960? Williamson roundhouse was still used as a carshop last I knew.

Of course only the 475 survived, and could not be in better hands today, operable at the Strasburg.

To my knowledge, the 0-8-0s were some of the last N&W engines under steam in 1960, maybe even THE last. I know several Y6bs operated until April or May of that year as well.

475 is not the only M class left. 433 is on display in Abingdon, Va.

Of course, you also have the larger, newer M class engines still at the scrapyard in Roanoke.

I'm not sure where the 475 photo was taken, but I don't think it was Roanoke. The water tanks on the hill and the coaling tower usually dominated the skyline in photos taken there. The shot of 449 appears to be in Christiansburg, not Bristol. This locomotive was a regular on the mixed train from Christiansburg to Blacksburg.

You could re-create the Salem shifter, circa 1957. 475 ran in local service out of Roanoke when it was not in "exhibition" service. A Roanoke Chapter NRHS member was the regular brakeman on that job in the late 50's. There are a number of photos around of it in freight service in it's "greasepaint". Sister 433, now preserved in Abingdon, also worked that job. It once derailed and rolled over in the middle of Rt 419 while switching the GE plant.

I remember a photo of 475, in a book on N&W steam, pulling the Christiansburg-Blacksburg mixed train, and the headlight was mounted in the center of the smokebox, giving it a more modern look.

475 had a centered headlight in the mid-fifties, and a 12,000 gal. tender. It got the smaller tender and box headlight when it was backdated about 1956.
