For those who don't know, the photos show LIRR 35 being moved on the first leg of what was a planned journey to the Black River & Western RR at Ringoes, NJ. Note the "NJ" and "RNG" on the pilot beam. The BR&W had arranged a long term agreement (IIRC for 20 years) with the 35's owners to bring the engine to Ringoes, overhaul her, and operate her alongside 2-8-0 60 in tourist service. Unfortunately the deal went south and the 35 remained at Mitchell Field, where it was being moved to in these linked photos. The loco shop (dating from the steam era) is still in regular use-albeit scheduled for replacement (someday). Ditto for the turntable. Dave |

The Morris Park backshops are not in use, so is the transfer table which was filled in. The roundhouse and turntable are still used however. 25T 399 was donated to the Railroad Museum of Long Island and is fully operable. The other 2, 397 and 398 are being rebuilt and are still used by the LIRR. |

Are any of these "Mike" or "Ike", a pair of small LIRR switchers used, for instance, at the 1939-40 World's Fair? |

No. "Mike and Ike" died long ago, having been replaced by a variety of shop switchers, including a 44T unit that is operating in Connecticut, these days. These particular units are GE 25T switchers. Now I don't get his; the one donated to RMLI was donated in operable shape. but the railroad retained an out of service unit for itself and another, ostensibly for the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum. The RMLI has very little trackage to operate upon, like none! |

Indeed, RMLI got the operable one. They have 2 others now. 399 and 398 were bought new in the 50s, 397 was bought 2nd hand in the 70s. 398 and 397 are getting rebuilt and painted into the new scheme. |
