I have heard that Fairmont made speeders powered by Ford model A engines. Is this true and are there any of these around in private or museum hands.

Yes, Fairmont used a Ford 4 cyl in the larger gang cars such as the A-series. There are many units restored currently in private hands throughout the country. Some background info on speeders can be found on www.narcoa.org

Fairmont used a Ford industrial engine in the "Crew" speeders. I went with a friend a few months back to buy one of that type. It has a
roof and can be fitted with side curtains for
protection from the weather.

Fairmont still furnishes parts for the speders they built.

Hi,

I think Bob is refering to what is commonly called the "Casey Jones" motorcar which had the drivetrain of a Model A Ford and was an early motorcar (pre A-4 w/Ford industrial(Pinto)engine).

That's about all I know about them. I think there are some pictures of them on the web, but you'd have to do a search or you might try www.narcoa.org

I think the web site you guys are talking about is the North American railcar operators Association. They produce a magazine with all kinds of ads for the equipment that they are interested in both new and old.

There were also rail cars powered with Model T engines. A couple of them have survived from the Maine Two-foot gauge lines. Cute little critters.

Photos of Ford touring cars converted for use on
the railroads keep popping up. I was suprised to see a photo of a Model T with an IC Section Foreman at the wheel It was fitted with flanged wheels.
We had one young man here during the model T era
who regularly drove the 5 or 6 miles to town from out in the country where he lived on the M&I tracks running with the tires on the rails. According to the story it worked fine until one day he met an unexpected train.
Of course the speeders were made obsolete by
trucks that can run on the highway or the rails thanks to flanged guide wheels that are lowered
to keep the tires on the rail.
