The latest on the ex-NYC High Line in NYC:

As one of my museum cohorts so aptly observed, the project could use a display of a reefer car to connect the current usage of the line (linear park) with its' railroad past.

Does anyone know what they are going to do with all that rail, joint bars and tie plates? What poundage is it? I bet there are a few museums that would REALLY like to get their hands on some of that.

I was impressed with their plans for a "greenway" for the property. But I agree with Dave; I think a reefer or boxcar on a short stretch of track acknowledging the lines rail heritage is certainly appropriate. Is there a warehouse door still existing that the car could go against as a typical loading/unloading point? And has this rail car idea even been submitted to the "Friends of the High Line" group?

Stephen, I think you must have seen entirely too many "Cheech & Chong" movies in your younger days......................:)

Gary and Les,

You both may be entirely too correct...

Actually, I don't know if Dave's "museum cohort" meant it in that vein, but for some reason it just hit me as oddly funny. Interesting what they are doing to preserve the High Line in NYC, though, even if only as a linear park.

Take it both ways... as Dave's "museum cohort" who mentioned the idea, I recall both the trains of solid refrigerator cars southbound on the NYC Hudson Division (symbol freight NY-4 was known as the "West Side Meat"), and I also recall the social culture of the 60s and 70s in New York.

Seriously, there were many packing houses and wholesale meat companies along the High Line, and a nicely-restored reefer or insulated boxcar (or two) would be entirely appropriate and would help explain and interpret the reason the structure existed in the first place. There seems to be a plethora of old steel Swift's reefers at many museums; perhaps one could be made surplus?

The rail weight is probably standard NYCS 105 or 127 Dudley section; I would guess that the contractors have already figured the scrap value into their bids....

I was under the impression that the roadbed would be restored once the deck and drainage system was inspected and repaired.

Not sure how many rail docks are left, as the area has evolved into some very expensive (residential) real estate.
