It's heart breaking to see this locomotive in such awful shape after being retired as late into the steam era as she was! Perhaps some group can properly seal her and repair the cosmetic damage, but after viewing your pictures, I feel quite sure she'll never have the opportunity to steam again. Most desperately, she needs some type of weather shed. There is an all too familiar lesson here in allowing inexperienced people to do asbestos abatement and park locomotive work. |

| Post subject: | CNR Steam Locomotive Haulage Ratings (Tractive Effort) |
Jeff, On the CNR, that figure is what's known as "Haulage Rating", which is a fancy way of saying "Tractive Effort". 1% of Haulage Rating equals 1,000 lbs of Tractive Effort. To determine the tractive effort for a steam loocmotive, the following equation is used: D² x S x 0.85P W Where "D" is the cylinder diameter in inches, "S" is the stroke in inches, "P" is the boiler pressure in PSI, and "W" is the driver diameter inches. For 6218, 6213, and 6167, this works out to: 25.5² x 30 x 0.85 x 250 73 Which equals 56,785 Lbs. When rounded up to the nearest thousand, you get 57,000 lbs or 57%. 6323 is an intersting case. When her class (U-3-b) was delivered, they had a haulage rating of 60% (which means they can exert 60,000 lbs of tractive effort), however mathematics clearly show that these engines can only exert 59,034 lbs of tractive effort. The reason for this is that the U-3-a class which was delivered in 1927 had slightly larger cylinders which allowed them to produce 60,175 lbs of tractive effort. Over the years, the cylinder diameter on these engines was reduced to correspond with the U-3-b class, which allowed them to produce 59,034 lbs of tractive effort. When members of the U-3-a class had the diameter of their cylinders reduced to 26", their Haulage Rating was changed to 59%. Once this started happening, the the Haulage Rating for the U-3-b class was corrected to 59%. So the whole reason for this discrepancy was CN wanted consistancy within Haulage Ratings, for similar motive power. Do the math and see for yourself. A new U-3-a has 26 1/4" x 30" cylinders, 250 PSI Boiler Pressure and 73" wheels, while a U-3-b has 26" x 30" cylinders, 250 PSI Boiler Pressure and 73" wheels. Regards, Joe |
