it funny that you mention signs I am very determined when I find a rail group (actual, museum, hobby, or model) to find them. It is amazing how many web sites lack a good map. I hate the linked type, because without "country directions" (left at the big blue indian, right at the 2nd light, etc) your chance of success degrades rapidly. then add in a the lack of signs I am truly lost. museums need both big, honkin' in your face locomotive billboards off the interstates & MORE importantly signs about 2' X 3' with a dark train silouette on a brown backgound with an arrow. (you know, kinda like "dis way to trains, dummy") as many as possible! (I am not very observant when talkin'...lol) TVRR uses these all around their place in. I would bet that in most locations, after a quick visit with the local road and hiway depts, the museum could get permission to make and deploy signs themselves. A local farmer with hiway frontage maybe will give you the private property access in trade for keeping the weeds wacked. dr dodge You bring up a good point. Our museum HAS signs in town, but could probably use more, and perhaps better ones. Might be interesting if we could post some photos of signs here of what other museums are doing. Perhaps someone could start a separate thread on the subject. Les OK - I'll start. The state of Maryland has a great heritage tourism sign program. At the time we first applied for highways signs in the late 1980s we were told that we needed an annual attendance of 20,000 in order to qualify. I promptly let the person know that we needed the signage in order to increase our attendance to 20,000! We were finally successful when we called on our state delegate's office for help. I'll see if I can get a photo of the sign. In the meantime, here's the fine print from the State Highway Administration: http://www.sha.state.md.us/businesswithsha/bizStdsSpecs/desManualStdPub/publicationsonline/oots/mmutcd/pdfs/sections/2g.pdf Wesley |

Wally Ely, in his delightful little book "Does This Train Go Up Hawk Mountain", details some of the challenges faced by the Wanamaker, Kempton & Southern when trying to get informational signs installed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation along nearby state highways. One tourist operation that has excellent directional signs - and needs them - is the Delaware River Excursion at Phillipsburg, NJ. The train boards from an area tucked out of sight but the town was well plastered with signage pointing the way. Alan Maples |
