1944 Baldwin 2-8-0 for sale

Not meant to be a commercial plug for ORM, but

I see Ozark Mountian Railcar just listed a 1944 Baldwin 2-8-0 for sale. Said to be restorable. Only $415K. Don't see that very often.

Per some previous posts about this loco, it aparrently is a nice low mileage engine.

I'd dicker over the price due to the torn fireman's seat upholstery... and the layer of dust about the backhead and cab area...

The locomotive is part of the Monte Holm collection. It is stored somewhere in the western US. Wasatch Railroad Contractors did some analysis of the engine.

The asking price seems high to me even though it is a relatively young locomotive. I am comparing this to other locomotives that have recently been sold or are for sale at the present time. You would still have to invest a load of dollars to bring everything up to current standards!! Just my thoughts!!

I assure you I am not her mother but I do like the look of this ones face. Experience has taught me that anything these S-160's may lack in appearance they make up for in voice. These are great sounding and running locomotives.

From the report I read if I had a use for a locomotive this size I would snap this one up. Except for the replacement tender it appears to be in nearly like new condition. The price is high but apparently so is the quality. About the only comparable 2-8-0s on the market I know of now are the ex LS&I 18 and 29 on the Mt. Hood. Really the prices are relatively similar as far as I can tell.

Slight correction. Ex-LS&I #29 is still on the Grand Canyon Railway. The two engines you are thinking of that are for sale are the 18 and 20 I believe. The 20 was never restored by the GC.

Any way you slice it, IMHO:

If your putting ANY steam loco into operation, restoring any steam loco TO operation, or sometimes even doing a decent cosmetic RESTORATION ----- its gonna cost you six figures. Possible exception of a tank engine, but then again......

How HIGH you go with those six figures is ENTIRELY up to you, however....

In the roundhouse in Scranton, nice light footprint for those trips to Carbondale.
