BTW is the Harrisburg station pretty much the same as it always was? My grandfather was a passenger car inpector there for 41 years. I can remember GG1s coming in from Philly and being switched out for steam heading west when I was a younster.

The station has undergone several rehabs over the past ten to fifteen years. The first major work was to scrape the windows of World War II blackout paint. The massive train shed that was full of holes has received a new cover and nice red paint. The rehab also added a high level platform, Amtrak's third on the line (30th Street and Lancaster are the other two.)

Thanks to Dan Cupper's leadership, GGI 4859, in Pennsy pinstripes and Brunswick green, sleeps on a disused siding under the train shed's protective cover. On the station concourse there is a display of GGI historical items.

Now that Amtrak has restored electric serivce, the Harrisburg station is a busy place with frequent service to Philly and New York. The only thing missing is an overnight train, with sleepers, to Chicago. Broadway anyone?

Thanks for the info. I have fond memories of going down there with my grandfather. He always worked the graveyard shift, even though he long since had seniority to work days. He just always liked the night shift. I can remember him checking everything from journal boxes to the doillies on the headrests.

I thought I heard a few years back that Amtrak wanted the GG1 out of there. Did they change there mind?

As for me I always liked the Tuscan Red with Gold stripes. Either way I think they are a great looking piece of equipment no matter what color. Too bad none of them will ever run again.
