Gosh, this is ancient news. This was a PRR type Pb car if I remember correctly. As Chairman of the NJ Museum of Transportation we tried to save this car. It was on private property and the owner wanted it removed quickly. The NJMT crew worked to remove the building that covered most of it but in the end, schedule and cost prevented its recovery. The owner bull dozed it. This was I believe the summer of 2000. In all fairness, the salt air destroyed just about every nail and bolt in the car. Very little held it together which made moving it even a short distance very expensive. We tried. We documented it as well. Several groups and individuals worked with us, especially the RR Museum of PA and Mike Venezia to name just a few. I would like to thank both once again for their help and guidance. Oh I still kick myself a bit, but I suppose it was the proper reality. The interior was quite complete, including the stain glass windows, gold leaf trim around doors and the gold leaf numbers over the curved doors. No seats were in it. Much of the wood timbers were in great shape, preserved I suppose by salt air? But the bolts that hold it together were no thicker than a paper clip in key areas. A steel frame was designed to run inside to give the car a back bone for the move. But at some point the owner went back in and stripped out the stain glass and he then made demands on removal that we could not live with. J.R.[/img] |
