With 12 cars, it appears the drawbar load is about right here. You can distictly hear the locomotive accelerating as is crests the summit. As a bonus with the local train passing the during the assault, you get a bit of the new with the old. Very impressive. With Saint Pancras now open and once the Welsh Highland Project is finished, I would like to plan a trip. We would like to focus on the UK but with HS1, now we can include a day trip to Paris, since the TGV can get you from London to Paris in 2-1/4 hours! Cheers! Randy |

Nice one Randy. It was tough enough to organize the Strasburg Picnic last summer, but maybe an RYPN trip to the UK a year to two???? Anyone??? Anyone?? - |

I rode behind this loco (masquerading for the month as sister 60027 "Merlin") on the North Wales Coast Line at speeds somewhere around 85-90 mph in September 1991--which seems to be about what she's doing here at Chippenham on the GWR. And, yes, you could still open the vestibule windows then. (Edit: YouTube comments has the poster saying that someone said they were doing 78 through the station......) If you want something more frightful to think about, consider that these locos/trains ran day in and day out at speeds like this in the 1900s, with NO headlights--and darkened stations, etc. during blackouts in WW1 and WW2. There are also similar videos at www.rail-videos.net . Yes, this is "why we do it." |

I'd venture to suggest that if we were to gather a group of about 25 or so, our friends at the Ffestiniog travel agency could work up a very intensively steamy program for us. The weak dollar is a problem, however. How many of us can commit to dates in 2009? dave |

Mark 1 and 2's: 20.4 meters. Mark 3's: 23 meters. Close enough. Between the speed and the shiny paint and "dark side", even I can't tell which they are. |

The coaches are Mark ones and twos. The maximum PERMITTED speed for locos with drivers of 74" diameter and above is 75 mph. A4 driving wheels are 80" diameter. |
