Photo taken during October 1962 fantrip: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.p ... 40&nseq=13 Canadian National 4-8-4 #6200 is shown at Stratford, Ontario in the company of a CN streamlined 4-8-4 (perhaps the preserved 6400?) There was a move to save the first locomotive of a particular class of steamer during preservation in Canada. Even resulting in some engines being renumbered (preserved CN 4-6-4 #5700 is in reality #5703 for instance.) But what was the significance of #6200 being preserved? She certainly WASN'T the first CN Northern. That honor went to #6100 which was actually not scrapped until November 1961, the last of her early sisters. So why wasn't #6100 saved? Her late scrap date almost makes it seem that she was being held for preservation. Anyone know the answer to these questions? Les |

6200 as she is today on the front lawn of the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa. She looks pretty naked, but I understand most of the collectible parts are in storage.

The curator, at that time, of the Museum of Science and Technology, in Ottawa, requested CNR and CPR, to send him the first locomotive in a the numbering series for some specific locomotive classes. In the case of CNR 5400, the real locomotive had already been partially butchered, so 5403 was selected to impersonate the lost engine. 6200 was selected because she was the "XX00" locomtive in the series. Incidentally, the missing parts of 6200 are in storage at the museum, along with a treasure trove of other steam locomotives and a Diesel or two. I was told that certain parts had been used to refurbish 6218 and 6167 in the end of their life cycles. 6200 is sealed, well painted, and might be a restoration candidate one day. |

Sorry, wrong number. :) 5703 was changed to 5700. |

Wasatch Railroad Contractors (Big Boy #4023), Dave Lathrop, and others, have demonstrated the ease of making simple replicas of "collectible" items like headlights, small appliances, and such, out of common, inexpensive materials that would really dress up locos like #6200 that look naked without their "jewelry". |
