What preservation plans are out there for this coming year, or current projects will be continued to be worked on?

Happy New Year,
Ray

In the narrow gauge world at the Sumpter Valley, we will build a new depot at Sumpter, complete the RFP for engineering feasibility for the extension to the east of 5 miles, hopefully complete the back shop facility and the loop at Sumpter, however, both of those projects are awaiting funding.

The Georgetown Loop is restoring RGS Caboose 0400 to operational condition this winter in the shop at Silver Plume. This includes some major truck and frame work on the car. The draft sills on one end of the car were broken and the whole end of the car was ready to literally fall off. The sills must have been broken in service on the RGS as there was chunk of old road grader blade laid across what was left of the intermediate sills and welded to the draft gear pocket to keep it from falling out of the car. The RGS must have been quite the place to work in its final years - trying to make the equipment make "just one more trip!"
The Loop hopes to use the car for specials and charters beginning next season.

Completion of items necessary for a BLUE CARD on locomotive GE13031. This includes completion of safety appliance installation, coupler stops, cab rewiring, new window installation, cutting lever and grabiron repair, rebuilding of "articulated stops" in the journal boxes and a whole host of weld repairs. All this hinges on the receival of FRA waivers for the lack of corner steps and 223 for the safety glass. wish me luck !

Oh geez.......

Georgia Northern 4-6-2- #107. Extent of restoration awaiting a boiler survey. Getting NHVRR 17 up and running for spring - their first steam program ever.

Phasing down involvement in Savannah now that the shop and staff I have built are up and running but keeping my hand in as consultant and provider of technical contracting work on projects now in the works. Looks like 4 more cosmetic and / or operational pieces will emerge from the shop there by spring if all goes well. Hoping 2-8-0 #223 will get green lighted there for the next major job.

No start date yet for returning streetcars to the Savannah riverfront as the city and NS Corporation continue to negotiate.

Winter plans for the Conway Scenic are brake rigging and refurbished wheel set work for some of the coaches, new bodywork/paint for the hirail trucks, repairs and upgrades to track equipment, and refurbishment of the south tower on the North Conway Depot.
The only major project that I can think of for next year is installation of 3500 crossties, and foundation work on Frankenstein Trestle.

Rosenberg Railroad Museum, in Rosenberg, TX, will open its doors in March or April. This has been nearly a 10 year project, and we are all grateful to have this phase almost complete.

Our local Tower 17 is the last manned interlocking tower in the state, and it will probably be decommissioned in 2002, and it will signify the end of an era of railroading in TX. Only a handful of these structures have been preserved, and we are working on an action plan to move the tower to our property after the RR is done with it.

Hopefully, our forlorn looking railcar will get a cover over it this year, and then restoration can begin on it, too.

Best wishes to all.

Holy cow Dave!
Can you enlighten me on these projects? Is there a slim chance that GNRR 107 will steam again, and where?!
Does the roundhouse now have an operational track, and what is it's extent?

Thanks for your help!

I don't know if it is restoration, preservation or just plain fun but my son and I hope to have our second engine near to being done by the end of the year. It is a 40 ton standard gauge 0-6-0T Vulcan. It came from Carbondale PA and spent it's working life at coal mines. At this time we have the boiler in the shop. We have about 100 staybolts out, aprox. 60 rivets out and two patches cut out of the firebox. The frame is outside up on blocks with the wheels ready to be turned as soon as we can get them hauled to the machine shop. We think it will be neat to double head the two engines when the second one is done.

Don't forget that each of these items is a potential article or at least a brief. Remember, your accomplishments of 2002 aren't as important if we don't know about them...

Ron,

Don't forget that we're going to be painting several of the freight cars this year and hopefully getting final work done on coach 20. Library could use a few touch ups as well.

Thanks, Taylor

How is she coming along, I haven't heard anything on her in quite some time. I remember seeing an article about the engine being moved in 1996 at the height of the floods, and that she would hopefully be restored by 2001. Were there unforseen problems with the steamer?

Thanks, Taylor
