Come springtime when the weather improves I will be starting a dome window sash project. Does anybody know the proper name and availability of that grey putty you use to pack the sash in all around to make water proof before you put on the stainless batton straps? I've heard it refered to as "dumb dumb", "conduit box filler",etc. I've noticed 3M makes similar products packaged in small strips for glazing and building motor homes. I need it in a five gallon pail. The main importance of this product is it never hardens. Thanks for any help.

The product we use in the electrical trade is usually referred to as "duct seal". It looks and feels like grey plasticine. I'm not sure how well it would work in your application. It usually comes fairly small rectangular packs wrapped in plastic.

If you cannot resolve the issue, you might consider BUTYL RUBBER CAULK. Available in cartridge tubes at many hardwares, ACE has their own brand. It is very sticky and seals well, although it requires some fussing and mineral spirits to clean up the squeeze out. I have seem window glass broken after 15 years, and under the skin, this stuff remains somewhat soft and with a good seal.

For example their Gray Metal Sash Putty is available in up to 3.5 gallon containers.

Go to an RV shop they sell permagum in rolls this is made for metal and glass water proofing on RVs. We also use it in refrigeration for good seal.
