Heard today that the Mark Twain Zephyr (http://www.railmerchants.net/mt-zephyr.htm), long stored at RELCO, in IL, and for sale by Rail Merchants International (http://www.railmerchants.net/index.htm) was being loaded onto flatcars. Anyone know who may have bought it?, and where it's headed?

Well I don't know much, but according to this photograph

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.p ... 398&nseq=0

RELCO itself is moving, maybe the trainset is moving to another place, and not sold.

I heard someone talking about this the other day, but I can't for the life of me remember where they said it was going. I think it is headed for static display somewhere.

Les,
While it would be neat to have a Zephyr to run 12 miles all the way to Shelby, I don't think it would really fit into the L&N / Southern atmosphere of the rest of our relics. Furthermore, we're so crammed now we wouldn't have room for it in the yard. Gotta get rid of some of the "junk" this year.

Wish I could remember where they said it was going.

Hey Bill, if the ALCO 0-4-0T is junk, I'll haul it off....

Richard,
Sorry, none of the steam locos are in the junk category. The Alco is still dismantled and stored in the shop. Maybe someday we'll get a rich uncle and put it back together. As a matter of fact, I don't think any of the diesels are junk either, although I wonder why we have 3 FM HR-44's just sitting. They used to be our main power, but spew too much oil. Our SW8's do the job for now.

IMHO I think we have too much equipment just sitting around wasting away. I think when we finally get our strategic plan done we'll start doing something with it all.

In answer to my own question, I just posted this article in Flimsies:

Anyone know what "luxury railcars" are headed there for display also?

Apparently, the trainset is enroute to the old L&M shop in Edwardsville for the rehab. A "recent" picture I saw had the power car riding, with cribbing, on a CN TTX-style long flat car. I say recent, as there is no snow in the picture!

Could be the press or the rumor mill mistook flatCAR for flatBED. A colleague and friend of this site are allegedly headed for Minooka tomorrow, so we will get a more reasonable report then. Thank Zephyrus SOMEONE is going to finally do something with it!

A friend and I drove out to Minooka, IL, today (1/12/08) to see if the train set was still there. The complete Mark Twain Zephyr, along with car 500, are all cribbed and tied down on CN flatcars awaiting the EJ&E to pick them up. Their trucks are also loaded on the flats that the cars are occupying. As the siding switch at the RELCO facility is on the west end, the train will have to be picked-up by the "J" Goose Lake Job and taken to East Morris and then back to Joliet, IL. It appears that the move could happen at any time if the clearances are okayed and the paperwork is completed. Stay tuned.
