Just curious if anyody else either:

a.) works out in anticipation of the operating season or
b.) tailors an existing exercise regimen for the same reason

I take b.

I add more cardio (treamill), more squats and legs, more upper back (rows) and forearms (hammer curls) and lower back (extension machine)

As I'm getting a little grey in the muzzle, this stuff is getting more important...given the conversations about age on here.

I also work on my body's flexibility. Many strains / sprains are a result of lack of flexibility when climbing on equipment, etc

I go religiously 3 times a week and do a 90 minute routine, half cardio (treadmill) half strength (machines) and a bit of flexibility thrown in.
I started doing it a while back when I found that firing #40 up the hill out of New Hope (about 3 miles of 1.3%) got me winded. Since I've been working out it no longer phases me and I believe it's well worth getting up a little earlier 3 days a week.
Plus the scenery at the gym is often quite worthwhile!!!

What off-season?

In sunny San Diego, we work year round and run trains year round.

I work out five days a week, occasionally six, but change my routine as I need to to keep increasing my strength (In addition to working on steam locomotives,I'm also a powerlifter.) I also do cardio three to four days a week. In the shop, they always ask me to lift the heavy stuff.....why is that?

Thanks, Jim, for reminding us how bad our weather is. LOL! But as I recall from my Navy days, it rains a bit during the winter out there. And the fog in the harbor early in the morning is awful!

Later!
