What is happening with the archives guys? The links to the photos in a number of the articles appear to have been lost. Did a folder of photographs on the website get renamed or eliminated by mistake?

Actually, most of the photos that appear in the archives were actually hosted elsewhere, on servers we don't control. When those images are removed, the link here becomes broken.
