Courtesy of the EJ&E and Illini Railists, the Mark Twain Zephyr is on the move as of Thursday, 24 January. While no specific routing to Granite City is posted, I humbly submit that it would be a dream come true if it could move south on the old CB&Q K Line from Burlington Iowa to St. Louis.

Somene shared some pictures with me yesterday of them digging her out of the mud and loading them up. It appears it was quite a task since she was sitting on the ground.

I also saw an artists rendering of her new home in Granite and think she'll be happy there. Better than sitting in the mud on the back 40 of a yard.

I noticed that the power car had a single headlight, as opposed to the large headlight/Mars light assembly found on some CB&Q shovel-noses. Not knowing anything about this particular trainset, was this train retired before receiving such a headlight assembly, or was it modified to an as-built appearance after retirement?

The train received one of the "stacked" Mars lights while in regular service. I was just thumbing through a book that I received from a friend on Saturday which discusses the lightweight CB&Q observation cars. A very good color shot of the MTZ is in the publication after it was retired to its first home in Mount Pleasant, IA. The train still had the Mars light in place in that photo. The Mars light (along with virtually the whole interior) has disappeared over the years. I seem to remember that there had been a fire in one or more of the cars while the train was at Mount Pleasant. Can anyone confirm or deny that? Also, the Winton engine was still in place when the train was moved to the Chicago-area and presumably to Minooka. It appears that it is gone now too. Was it removed at RELCO and does it still exist?
