Thronateeska Heritage Center (Albany, GA) will be scrapping an ACL Class O-27 boxcar body (AC&F, 1951, 40-ft) soon, probably starting this weekend. The body was much deteriorated when we acquired it, and the trucks and all brake rigging, valves and etc. were used to restore a Class O-25 boxcar (the last remaining intact O-25 as far as I can determine). Almost anything that could be used has been removed.

There are still some door hardware (latch) pieces I plan on salvaging and, while I don't have any plans for them at this time, I thought I would offer them up if a museum is in need. If anyone is interested I will take some digital photos today and can e-mail this evening or tomorrow.

Thronateeska has 3 other O-27's in the collection, one of which has been restored to an early 1960's ACL appearance. The other 2 remain in their 1971 SCL livery and are on friction bearing ACL trucks.

BTW, if anyone is interested in swapping something (ACL, SAL, SOU or CofGA) for one of the 2 unrestored ACL O-27's let me know. We would consider boxcars from SAL or CofGA, or almost anything different (flat, gon, 2- or 3-bay open or covered hopper) in trade...as long as its not a rust bucket. Also, it must have been built no later than 1970.

now, in my opinion, the scraping of a car is one of the "lost oppertunities"
(so is any major operation)

Why not make it an event?
People will pay to come see a once in a "lifetime operation"
museum pool: how long will it take? how many pieces?etc

make a nice safe viewing area
its amazing what people will come to if promoted well
sell dogs and burgers

when I see 20+ people standing around watching something, I think, how much would they pay to watch that, and why am I not collecting it...lol

"Make an event out of it"?? (O.O)

Please pardon me while I shudder at the perception of the general public that said museum is scrapping "perfectly good" "museum relics"....... and doing it as a public spectacle.............. Yes, said perception would be very ill-informed and inaccurate, but what would this look like to someone that might just have a wooden boxcar out in a barn looking for a home? "Oh, they'll probably just burn it for firefighting practice, no way will I give it to them....."
